The Hidden Struggles of Rural Girls During Menstruation
In rural DR Congo, girls aged 13–16 face daily struggles due to the lack of menstrual hygiene products. Many rely on ripped clothing or old underwear, and very few can access proper sanitary pads. This reality leads to physical, emotional, and social challenges:
- Bullying and being laughed at in school or with peers
- Missing classes during their periods
- Emotional distress and loss of self-confidence
- School dropouts and shattered ambitions
Understanding the Root Causes
Why This Problem Exists and How We Can Solve It
Reasons
- Logistical: Products are rarely stocked in rural shops.
- Socio-cultural: Stigma and lack of knowledge (only ~6% community approval).
- Economic: At $3–3.5 per pack, menstrual pads are unaffordable for families living on $1/day. Mothers with multiple daughters cannot provide them.
Consequences
- Risk of fungal and bacterial infections
- Urinary tract problems and skin irritation (dermatitis)
- Emotional damage, loss of self-confidence, school dropouts, and blocked opportunities
Solution
Through the campaign “Empowering Women with Skills and Knowledge,” Buene Pads provides:
- 4 reusable pads per set, lasting up to 6 months
- Free distribution to rural girls
- A sustainable impact with the principle: “Each one, teach one.” Empowered girls will empower the next generation.
