On International Menstrual Hygiene Day, Buene Pads undertook a compassionate and impactful initiative to support the menstrual health and hygiene of women and girls in the prison located in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. This initiative was driven by our commitment to ensuring that every woman and girl, regardless of her circumstances, can manage her menstrual cycle with dignity and proper hygiene.

Distribution of Reusable Menstrual Pads and Hygiene Kits

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by incarcerated women and girls, Buene Pads organized a comprehensive distribution of essential menstrual hygiene products. Our team provided high-quality Buene reusable menstrual pads, which are designed for comfort, durability, and sustainability. These reusable pads are an economical and eco-friendly solution, ideal for the prison environment where access to menstrual products can be limited.

In addition to the reusable pads, we distributed buckets to facilitate proper menstrual hygiene management. These buckets are crucial for maintaining cleanliness and dignity, allowing women to manage their periods discreetly and hygienically.

Educational Workshops on Menstrual Hygiene

Beyond the provision of physical products, Buene Pads placed significant emphasis on education. We conducted in-depth workshops aimed at empowering women and girls with the knowledge they need to manage their menstrual health effectively. The workshops covered a range of important topics, including:

  • Proper Use and Care of Reusable Pads: Detailed instructions on how to use, wash, and maintain the reusable pads to ensure their longevity and effectiveness.
  • Hygiene Practices: Comprehensive guidance on maintaining personal hygiene during menstruation, including the importance of washing hands, using clean water, and keeping the reusable pads clean.
  • Understanding the Menstrual Cycle: Education on the biological aspects of menstruation to help women and girls understand their bodies better, recognize what is normal, and when to seek medical advice.

Promoting Dignity and Reducing Stigma

One of the core objectives of our initiative was to promote dignity and reduce the stigma associated with menstruation, especially within the challenging environment of a prison. We facilitated open discussions and created a supportive space where women and girls could share their experiences and concerns without fear of judgment. By addressing the stigma and encouraging open communication, we aimed to foster a more supportive and understanding community.

Collaboration with Prison Authorities

Buene Pads worked closely with the prison authorities to ensure the smooth execution of our initiative. This collaboration was vital in tailoring our approach to meet the specific needs of the prison environment and ensuring that the distribution and educational activities were conducted in a safe and orderly manner. The support from the authorities also helped in creating a sustainable framework for continued menstrual hygiene support within the prison.

Impact and Future Commitments

The response to our initiative was overwhelmingly positive. The women and girls expressed profound gratitude for the reusable pads and buckets, which significantly improved their ability to manage their menstrual health with dignity. The educational workshops were particularly well-received, with many participants appreciating the newfound knowledge and understanding of menstrual hygiene practices.

Buene Pads is committed to continuing our support for menstrual health and hygiene in underserved communities. Our future plans include expanding our outreach to more prisons and similar institutions, providing ongoing education, and ensuring that women and girls have the resources they need to manage their menstrual health effectively. We believe that menstrual health is a fundamental human right and remain dedicated to making a lasting impact in this area.
